Ringing in the New Year as an NBT

I have a confession to make: I put this post up once before, but then I got suspicious because it's all about works in progress, and I don't really like to talk about my WIPs. So I took it down. But then I decided to put it back up, because I was tagged by my blogging and writing buddy Gabrielle Carolina and I wanted to honor that. I also decided to be a little more cryptic so readers who are interested in my WIPs can get a teaser. Sound good?

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop is a chance for authors to tell everyone what they’re working on.
Thanks for stopping by and huge apologies for the wonky formatting. Curse you, cut and paste!

1. What is your working title of your book?
I just started a brand new book, about which I will say NOTHING. I never talk about books that truly are in progress. But I do have two other books that are complete or close to complete. They are called RUSH and BREATHING ROOM.
2. Where did the idea come from?
For RUSH, I got the idea after visiting my hometown at the end of the summer. There's a big university there, and all of the sororities were having (what else?) rush. I was in a sorority, too, and thought it would be a great jumping-off place for a novel.  BREATHING ROOM came to me as I thought about what it would be like to be the daughter of a YA author--what kind of mom do I *not* want to be?

3. What genre does your book fall under?
Both are Young Adult Contemporary, though I think RUSH could also be classified under that fairly new, somewhat amorphous genre called New Adult.

4. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? Fair warning: since I watch a lot of Disney and Nick with my daughters, my list is heavy with stars from those networks.

And I know these lists mean nothing if you know nothing about the characters. But someday, after you've read the books, you can refer back, right?

Maddy - Bridgit Mendler

Imogen - Shay Mitchell

Cassandra - Jennifer Stone

Delia - Dianna Agron

Meghanne - Caroline Sunshine

Highland - Zendaya Coleman

Trudy - Halston Sage

5. Give a one-sentence synopsis of your book.

I'm going to pass on this one, since I don't want to reveal too much about them. :-)

6. Will your books be self-published or represented by an agency?
I'm represented by Holly Root, so I always rely on her expert guidance. And while traditional publishing is wonderful, I'd love to explore my digital horizons, too. I hope to make some announcements in the next couple of months.
7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
I usually have a couple of projects going at once, so it's hard to say. It can take 6 months to get a first draft done and another 6 months to polish, depending on the project and what's happening in my personal life. Or I can work faster. If I ever get to devote all of my time to writing novels, I'll go faster still!
8. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
I'm really not sure - I've never seen a  book like RUSH. As for BREATHING ROOM, it feels a bit to me like Maureen Johnson crossed with a little Sarah Dessen. How's that for aiming high?
9. Who or what inspired you to write these books?

Don't know what movie this image is from? What, may I ask, is your damage?

10. What else about your books might pique the reader's interest?
While I don't spill any secrets, I do give a pretty honest look at some aspects of sorority life.

And BREATHING ROOM has what I think is a pretty kick-butt revenge scene.

Thanks so much to Gabrielle for tagging me! I didn't tag any fellow authors, because they're superstitious, too. But I'm reading some great stuff right now, and I'll be sure to share what some of my author friends are up to in some upcoming posts.

Happy New Year, everybody!
